What happens to my motor tax when I sell my car?
October 19th, 2026
In Ireland, any remaining valid motor tax normally stays with the car when it is sold. You cannot transfer it to your next vehicle, and selling your car does not, by itself, qualify you for a motor tax refund. Refunds are available only in specific circumstances, subject to the motor tax rules and supporting evidence.
If you have recently paid for several months of motor tax, you may expect to recover the unused amount when selling. Understanding the rules helps you plan the cost of changing cars.
It also avoids confusion at handover: motor tax and insurance are separate, and they are not dealt with in the same way when a vehicle changes owner.
· Remaining tax: Valid tax generally stays with the vehicle until its expiry date.
· Your replacement car: Its motor tax must be dealt with separately.
· Refund eligibility: Circumstances such as permanent export, scrapping or an unrecovered theft may qualify, subject to the rules.
· Refund applications: These generally require at least three whole unexpired calendar months, surrender of the disc and supporting documents.
· Expired tax: Discuss the vehicle’s status with the buyer and arrange lawful transport if it cannot be driven.
· Expecting an automatic refund after an ordinary sale.
· Assuming remaining tax can move to another car.
· Removing the tax disc because it was paid for by the seller.
· Confusing motor tax with insurance cover.
Autobuy states that a vehicle does not need valid motor tax to be considered for purchase. Tell the team its current status before your appointment and confirm how it will reach the branch.
